About me

Me talking about myself.......

I always knew I would write a book.  In my mind, I assumed it would have something to do with ACES (adverse childhood experiences) or Jesus.

When it was laid on my heart to write a book for children who live with type one diabetes, like my own daughter, it took me some time to wrap my head around the possibility.

As any T1D family knows, every day is a roller coaster ride and very often our hands just stick up in the air in complete and total surrender.  I didn't want to create a fluffy, fairy tale children's book that fails to illustrate the complexity and rawness of emotion that surfaces in children when faced with such a consuming, dangerous, and relentless disease process.  At the same time, I didn't want to depress anyone, either!

I wanted authenticity.  I think it is important, in literature, to honestly and accurately represent life experiences so children don't close a book and assume that their feelings and experiences are invalid or abnormal.  Because, truth be told, everyone who receives this diagnosis will struggle to some degree and to ignore that is to ignore the very reality that our warriors live with every day.  I wanted to acknowledge the trials and tribulations of living with this disease but highlight the triumphs.

Because, quite literally, every single day our type one diabetic warriors not only survive but thrive, it is time to celebrate.  And, until a cure is found, we will soldier on.
